This activity was prepared on a magnetic whiteboard. The focus of this activity was to learn about place value. I wanted the children to learn about the ten and one structure of teen numbers in a interactive way.
I combined different hands on materials that represent teen numbers. I used a magnetic Base 10, the Sequin’s teen Board and wooden magnetic numbers. These materials were combined to help children have a clear understanding of the structure of teen numbers.
Lomani was the first child to interact with this activity. She already had some previous experience using these materials and therefore a basic understanding about place value. I showed her how I did numbers 11 and 12 and she eagerly started making number 13 on the Teen Board by sliding the wooden number one card.
Then Lomani took a one ten road and three units from the magnetic Base 10 and placed them under the number 13.
Th
Lomani wrote the number 13 on the whiteboard.
I could see that Lomani was feeling confident with the activity. She continued using the same procedure with all the teen number.
