The focus of this activity was to learn to identify and to categorise the edible parts of plants we eat.

For this activity I prepared some picture cards showing different parts of plants such as leaves, roots, seeds, flowers, and stems. I added to the activity two pieces of sweet potatoes that we put in water some weeks before and that were already growing small roots and beautiful leaves.

I decided to add real samples of plant parts such as asparagus, celery, corn, beans, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, etc. Lomani started with the activity after we discussed together which parts of the plants we normally eat. After that she started to place the cards in the their appropriate place.

Aubrey and Chevy did the activity as well and we also discussed about the parts of the plants we eat. They named the parts of the plants I displayed on the table and after that they tasted some of the food, especially the tasty seeds.

The following day the children planted some of their bean seeds that they had been germinating using wet cotton for several days. Now the children will learn how to look after the plants.
