Sometimes children have difficulties when they have to draw animals. Before the children started this drawing activity, they told me that they didn’t know how to draw a cat or a cow. I showed then the sequence card activity and they started to change their mind.

One of the children took the first sequence card and said ” I can draw an oval” and she did. Then she took the second card and said ” I can draw a circle ” she continue following the sequenced cards until she realised that she drew a cat.

I prepared six sequenced cards with easy shapes that the children could draw. Gradually the cards added one more feature of the cat.

Aubrey started drawing the oval. It was a big oval. I was not sure if she could fit the legs, but I let her to see what happens when the cat’s body is too big.

Aubrey continued the drawing sequence. She made a comment about that she didn’t have much space to draw the legs. “What do you think you can do next time?” I asked her. ” I will draw a smaller oval” Aubrey answered. Great learning!

Aubrey finished her drawing . She decided to write the word cat. Then looking her drawing she laughed and said ” I like my fat cat”. “I like it too” I said.

Chevy follow the some steps that Aubrey. He was so happy with his drawing that he asked me to take a photo with her cat.

The children asked me if I could do the some sequenced cards with the drawing of a cow. I prepared the cards and the children straight away did the drawings. They were so happy with their cows that they asked me to make a photocopy so they could take it home to show to their parents.

The drawing activity was a success. I already have a list of animals that the children asked me to prepare as a sequenced cards.
