We have a worm farm at Little School. Worms have a special diet so certain foods must be avoided. In this activity, the children were investigating what foods worms can or cannot eat.
For this activity I first wrote two lists, one with the food to be avoided, and the other with the food that worms can eat. Then, I incorporated some replicas of the foods. Finally, I prepared a tray with soil and I laid two gorgeous worms.
This is how the activity looked like.

Chevy began reading the list and found that worms can eat
lettuce. So, Chevy gave some lettuce to the worms.
To add more visual
elements to the activity, I decided to add some pictures of the foods. I glue
them onto pieces of cardboard.
Chevy continued reading and giving the food to the worms.
The children decided to play this activity together at the library.
The children put in practice what they learnt. The children took some scraps of food from the compost bin and gave them to the worms. The children were careful that all the food they were giving to the worms were safe to eat.
To finish the day the children made some drawings and writing in their notebooks. They cut and pasted in two sections pictures of the foods that worms can eat and the ones can’t eat.
