The children at Little School are learning about money and, what better way to learn than opening a shop and using real Australian coins. Another interesting hands-on activity.

I went around Little School and found some interesting objects for the shop. I put a tag in each of them with the price in dollars and cents. I added at the back of the tags a picture of their correspondent coins, so the children could have a visual idea of the coins needed to pay during their shopping experience.

In the shop I included a pen and a small notebook for writing the receipts to make the shop more realistic and to give an the children a meaningful opportunity for writing numbers. Then I collected coins ranging from 5 cents to 2 dollars.

The shop is open. The customer is looking for something to buy.
The first customer bought something for 20 cents.
The shop assistant prepares the receipt.
The children swap roles.

To reinforce their knowledge of coins, the children also played a game I designed.
